69 - Disgustipated

It has been a long time since I heard this track, but I was reminded of it today and so I found a tool lyrics page and looked it up. I remember the first time I heard this... I was in high school, and I used to go to sleep with headphones on listening to a CD. The CD was Undertow by Tool, and as you may or may not know, track 69 is a "hidden" track on the disc. So the last song plays then silence for a while... then this song startles me back awake just as I began to drift off to sleep. As I listened it became one of my favorites.

Below is the first part of the track, copied from:
http://toolshed.down.net/lyrics/undertowmaster.html

"And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own Midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possessed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on........

This is necessary."

On the surface it is kind of amusing, "Let the rabbits wear glasses!" and the carrot harvest holocaust. But, on a deeper level it is a bit disturbing, what if it is true, that the unheard cries of the "carrots" reverberate all around us, along with the cries of the other life forms that we slaughter everyday. Should murder be defined as stopping the life process of any innocent life form that by design or conscious determination could continue its own existence, where it not for a destructive interruption of that life process.

Let's take for example a tree, its structural design does not include a system that can take its desires and transmit them through the movement patterns of any transmission medium, i.e. light, sound, etc. It cannot communicate to us in the typical manner that we are accustomed to, but does that matter? Can the will to live not be seen in its growth, year after year? It is not a lifeless hunk of matter, there are very deliberate and organized activities that show a pattern of consistent life sustaining activity. It lives, on its own and it has done nothing but try to sustain that life process, it is innocent. So what kind of being are we to take a sharp metal disc or chain and tear it through the trunk, destroying the ability for the tree to continue its life functions. Isn't that by definition, taking the life of an innocent and if so, is that also the definition of murder?

What if trees could run away from our saws, what if they screamed in terror as the weapon of violence approached. What if it could beg for its life, with cries of fear? Would it be different then? Would we let them live, would we feel guilt for our transgressions against this innocent entity that only wants to survive. I would like to think that it would matter to us, that if we heard the screams and saw the tears, we would stop the killings in an instant. But then this leads me to consider that since it cannot, it is at a disadvantage, it is a weakness in its abilities. So not only are we taking an innocent life, but we are preying on a weak and disadvantaged form of life that cannot fight or beg for its survival.

By design every cell in its body is trying to sustain life of the organism. It is obvious it is trying to live and would if we left it alone to do so, whether or not it can tell us this should not matter. Are the cries of the trees and carrots falling on deaf ears of humanity? The supplications that if heard, might stop the murderous intentions, of our callous hearts. Are we by design the great destroyers of life, is our need to propagate our own species more powerful than what we become when using such terrible methods of sustenance. According to Maynard, life feeds on life, which feeds on life, which feeds on... and this is necessary. Or is it?

It may be true that we have to rely on the transformation of matter into edible forms, through external life processes. But there are different ways to do this. One way is a path of life destruction, killing something by stopping its life process and then consuming it. This applies to all animal slaughter, along with any method of harvest were we dismember a plant that is in a sustainable form and consume it. There is another path of symbiosis, where we find our food in the plants that discard the ripe products of its development process when it is finished with them. An example of this would be the fruit of an apple tree. The apple fruit develops to a certain point at which time the stem to the fruit undergoes certain changes where it weakens to a point that the fruit is disconnected from the main plant body and is no longer receiving nutrients or water from the tree, at which point the fruit falls from the tree and begins to decompose. The life process is over for this ripe fruit, it is no longer in a sustainable form, it is dead/dying and can be consumed by any animal, including humans, without destroying a life process. We are then working in cooperation with the patterns of the life processes and not against them. If we don't eat the ripe apple, then it decomposes back into a form that can be reused by the tree to feed itself and develop more fruit in future fruiting cycles.

So far, I have been focused on plant life. I do not even want to begin with animal slaughter, where the look of panic or pain is apparent, and the sounds of the animals tell another similar and even more horrifying tale. Where the cries can even be heard sometimes, but since it is not in a language we understand, must be nonsense, right? You tell me, check out some of the videos on this site, http://www.petatv.com/ (WARNING: seriously disturbing images in the clips on this site.)

I say we need to look around more carefully and find our place in the patterns of life processes. A place where we can exist in harmony with the other lives that inhabit this planet. I think we all feel this on a fundamental level, but our cultures and life methods training do not reinforce this option for symbiotic existence with the earth. We can redefine our methods and desires, but not without a concerted effort to overcome the inertia of our current path.

Can I get an Amen?

  1. No, you can´t. We are still savages. :*)
Actually we are mostly like a disease in the earth, judging by the way we act. Altought, we´re not the only ones. Doesn´t the bird leave the nest to kill, and come back with food for their children? Or.. Maybe not. Since an eagle could eat him before he has the chance to get back to the nest. There are even plants that "kill". What is this, an exception because they are not "concious"? I thought the most interesting part of the words you recall were precisely the ones you repeat "Life feeds on feed feeds on feed feeds on...". We are taught two things, there is a food chain, and we are at the top of it. Still, in a basic level, we experiment a certain feeling in the stomach. A kick on the conciousness. When a tree is falling down under an axe. Or when you hear the sound of the bullet that will haunt dawn a deer in the forest. Even when you cut a flower. Haven´t you experienced it? It hurts to cut the flower, but maybe the flower is there for us to enjoy it. Or is it? there was a poem of a saint who would took his sandals so he would not hurt the stones of the walk he was going thru. Ah, the poetry. So near, and so away from reality. We humans, filled with so many good aspirations that we are not able to live by even on a basic level...

  2. Did you know that Native Americans could have sustained life harmoniously on this plannet forever without harming it? There is also a kind of vegitarian called a vegan...Check it out. They only eat the parts of plants that have fallen to the ground. There are many in this world who know how to live on it without harming it, they are just out numbered by the ignorant and careless..

About the Rune "Algiz"...

I have been asked about the Rune and what it means, and after a bit of online research I found out quite a few interesting things. Before this search, I knew it meant "safehaven" or "protection". There are some interesting things to interpret from it's meaning and my use of it. Seems the Dark Lord was a guardian/protector... and one of my favorite finds during this search for the meaning was the following bit of inspiration that is from the www.tarahill.com site. You will also see this below, but I wanted to put it here too for emphasis. "In terms of the journey, we have passed through death and rebirth, and must now face the Guardian before returning to our world. It is he who charges us to use our new-found power wisely. The person can no longer be simply concerned with their own personal development, but must now consider the effect that their actions may have on others. This is a crucial turning point, and the person will either choose to adopt a syste

30 years ago, Emergence...

Today was the 30th anniversary of the day I was birthed. 3 decades on Earth so far and what is it all for? I'd like to think that my particular presence in space and time has meaning. That all the effort and resources my parents and teachers over the years have invested in me will somehow come to fruition. I feel like I have accomplished some things that have been worthy of their contributions, but in some ways I feel like there is still so much to do to make it up to them. I am still working on my BS degrees in Physics and Information Technology. There are many good reasons I have for such a drawn out timeline, but to me it is hard to swallow. I should be finishing my first PhD by now, but my choices in life have not manifested that reality. It is still my goal to accomplish someday, but I have become more comfortable with the way things have turned out so far within the given timeline. I have learned that since, as far as I can determine, there is only one of me, a

The Value of Procrastination...

For most of my life I have been called a procrastinator. Usually this carried a negative connotation. I have worked hard in my personal habits to be more responsive when asked to do something, but I still have some of this tendency to put things off until later. But, in the last few years, especially as the speed of information flow, the change to systems I work with and the demand on my time increases, procrastinating a little has been a benefit. Let me explain... The common meaning of procrastination involves the deferment of activities to a point where the delay is detrimental to the successful execution of the activity. But, in situations were there are rapidly changing needs, the definition of the need and related activities change as well, and to put in a bit of delay in execution can buffer the dynamic system a bit. The buffer results in the initial set of rapidly evolving changes to be skipped over, and allows the more finalized set of necessary activities to be more clearl
