Mourning the Death of the Path...

We are the product of our path though the universe. The sum total of the life we have lived to each moment. The stream of events and interactions of our entity with the universe.

We are confronted with little decisions every moment, one could say that life is a continuous decision. The persistent choice. These little decisions lead to other little decisions leading to others and so on. Our path started before we were conceived and the effects of our path will linger on even after our bodies have dissolved.

We are sensory creatures, we experience the world around us with limited capabilities. Our eyes only detect a certain wavelength of radiant energy. Our ears only tell our brain about a certain range frequencies. Our touch has a minimum resolution. Then we have a range of detection of events, we only can know what we can bring into our minds from the sensory systems. You tell me something, but you are on the moon, odds are I won't hear it. And if I don't hear it, I won't know it.  I can only know, what I know that I can know.

But what happens when we do hear and we do see and we do understand. And the information decoded from the signals have meaning. Not only do they have meaning, but they have deep life changing meaning. But, there is a catch... How do I feel about all of those other possibilities, turning points of paths not chosen, passing by while I follow the only path I will know.

You only get one path per life... And how much influence you have to guide the path as it unfolds is uncertain. You are responding to your senses and the neural structures that have been building up over time.

I am not sure about choice, I see even within myself and my processes how little I actually do with my mind. Even the things that I do seem to think about and "decide" on, never have turned out exactly how I imagined them to when I "chose". There are too many variables, there are too many possibilities.

What I am sure about is that choice or not, there is the path and there is what is not on the path. This is the issue at hand.

Today, I feel the joy of the new path I am moving on now, and the sadness of the death of others I have let go of. I look back on all the things leading up to now, I see one event lead to another and so on. But, the "right" path is a mystery. Is this one that I am on at this moment the best one, or is it just the one that "is"?

You can't go left and right at the same time, at least not for very far.
A path can only go in one direction at each moment. The other infinite directions are not able to be.

It is to me like a miscarriage...
The potential of what could have been is gone, and will never be.
Yes, you might have another chance in the future, and if it works out you will bring human life into the world. But, the potential life that carried with it hope for the future, is no longer there and I feel that it must be mourned. Maybe there is another life to come, and maybe this was for the best that things went the way they did this time... but maybe not.

That is what I cry for now, the death of the possibility.

  1. A path is just a road, if you choose not to take one or the other now, that doesn't mean the path is gone. If the road you have chosen becomes a dead end one day, simply look back on the map, find the turn you didn't take, go back and you will see it waiting for you. But if you find that the road you have chosen today takes you on a wonderful journey, cry no more for the road you didn't take. It too leads somewhere and though it will mourn the loss of a traveler with its own tears, it will still bend and turn on it's own way. Funny how choices work, how things happen at the same time, some choose to go one way, while at the same time others choose the opposite. I wish you the best of luck on your path. You will never become lost as long as you remember you have a map.

  2. The time to think about the path is before you choose it, once you are on it, you need to concentrate all your energy to make the best out of it.

The Value of Procrastination...

For most of my life I have been called a procrastinator. Usually this carried a negative connotation. I have worked hard in my personal habits to be more responsive when asked to do something, but I still have some of this tendency to put things off until later. But, in the last few years, especially as the speed of information flow, the change to systems I work with and the demand on my time increases, procrastinating a little has been a benefit. Let me explain... The common meaning of procrastination involves the deferment of activities to a point where the delay is detrimental to the successful execution of the activity. But, in situations were there are rapidly changing needs, the definition of the need and related activities change as well, and to put in a bit of delay in execution can buffer the dynamic system a bit. The buffer results in the initial set of rapidly evolving changes to be skipped over, and allows the more finalized set of necessary activities to be more clearl...

Transition Phase 1 is Complete...

We have been in Manhattan, KS since the 5th of July. Today, July 14th, the moving company brought our things from Maryland and unloaded it into the house we are renting. It is a really nice place and we are happy to have found somewhere to stay that is walking distance to both of our offices and to almost anything we would want to do in town. We now begin the process of unpacking, arranging and settling in to our new home. Work is going really well and I am now beginning the process of incorporation as I launch my new web services business. The next big milestone will be the sale of our home in Maryland. It is not going to be a very good deal for us, but the seller we bought from and the buyer we are selling to have made out like bandits. I am looking forward to a day to be on the other end of the deal. Life is changing, that is for sure. I open my arms and mind to the unknown as we begin to explore this new place we call home.

4 years and 7 days since Blog creation...

My first post to this blog was on Monday 12/27/2004. It seems like so long ago, especially if time is a way to measure change and I look back at all the changes that have happened since then. I would say that time seems to pass more quickly when things are changing a lot and when we are trying to do as much as we can in the short amount of time we have to do it in. I thought that this was interesting, according to http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html , from 12/27/2004 up to today there have been 1468 days. 1468 days can be converted to one of these units: * 126,835,200 seconds * 2,113,920 minutes * 35,232 hours * 209 weeks (rounded down) And in that ridiculous amount of time I have only posted 52 times to my blog. That is only 1 post per month (28 days) on average. Not the best I can do by a long shot, considering all the stuff I am doing each day. Not a very accurate reflection of all the change and adventures during that time. So, for 2009 and on, I wil...
